'DREAM' & 'VISION'-
THE RESTORATION OF A
DUNEDIN, NZ CABLE CAR RUNNING UP
HIGH STREET TO MORNINGTON
Before going into detail of how I propose this, permit me to share with you just how the 'DREAM' began
Almost 30 years ago, when returning from a period in Australia and returning with custody of my then four-year old daughter, we went on a visit to Dunedin for her to meet her Grandmother - my dear old Mother. For me it was a bit like a 'walk down memory lane' as we visited my old work-places - schools - childhood 'hang-outs' etc [for her, probably quite boring]
Much of the day was spent travelling up old Cable Car routes. You can just imagine trying to explain to a 4-year old what a 'Cable Car' was and how it operated. For me, a moment of pride and of reminiscing over days long gone - the last had ceased already over 22 years by then. By the end of a couple of days of that,the thoughts kept going through my head - "What if I could find a way to have one restored" and shared that idea with my Mother and a brother. As you can imagine - I was told to stop 'day-dreaming.'
Well, that's what it actually would have been - "A Day-Dream" unless I took action to develope the 'day-dream' into something tangible. Fortunately, there are any others who share that same 'DREAM" who have taken some action, and a Trust now exists to focus on restoring the Mornington route, from the 'Stock Exchange' in the city centre, up High Street to the old terminus at Mornington - check that out here. But my mind goes even further - 'What if Stage 2 was to do the same with the Maryhill Extension Route?"
At this juncture let’s stop and relate a “Once upon a time” true story.
Many years ago the late J F Kennedy - President of the USA, asked the following question of an Engineering Scientist and Professor of his day –
“WHAT WOULD IT TAKE TO PUT A MAN ON THE MOON”?
The Scientist/Professor was silent for a few minutes knowing that the President was looking for a Scientific Engineering answer. He then turned to the President with the following few very simple yet profound words –
“THE WILL TO DO IT”
The above is now a matter of History.
The 'Steering Committee' already exists - the Will exists - the Enthusiasm exits - the Opportunity and Support exits - the FUNDING is the major problem and that's where my thought has been for the greater part of the past three decades. "Where there is a will - there is a way" - just have to find it. And I have as we are going to reveal. You see, as an accountant and an economist, I always knew that government funding on this massive scale - for this type of project was never going to come easy - if ever. This needed to be an Entrepreneurial undertaking but how?
Back in June 2004 I was invited to Rotorua to have a 'sneek' preview of a Company, at that stage in 13 countries and proposing to Launch into Australia then New New Zealand. Cut a long story short, instead of accepting the kind invite for dinner and stay overnight, I chose to drive 500kms home. Arriving at Waiouru, feeling very tired, hungry and needing a toilet break, I stopped. Didn't remember going through Taupo or over the Desert Road - my mind was so busy with the potential I had just seen. Getting out of the car I slammed my fist of the roof saying, "I've got it - whoa......!! Now I know where the funding can come from....."
Once this Company launched in New Zealand in March 2006, we set about building a Team of some 2,600-odd people, predominantly in the lower half of the North Island of New Zealand - with the help of many others. All the time my mind was on how to use this to FUND A CABLE CAR RESTORATION SCHEME. Many hypothetical examples still exist in my computer.
By late 2007 I was ready [so I thought] to present the scenario to interested parties in Dunedin. I even remember the exact date was set for me to attend a meeting in Dunedin - 14th November 2007. That meeting was quickly and abruptly canned by a certain gentleman [I have long since forgiven him his 'ignorance'] when he realised that this Company uses 'Network Marketing' - more correctly, Direct Selling as its Business Model. It's high time we got "real" and understood that this Business Model has been around for a very long time, and is a perfect vehicle to achieve something like this magnitude. I presented my 'case' to a lawyer son of a school mate and after his own investigations, came back to me saying, "Dave, this is totally legal and legitimate, plus makes perfect sense for what you are proposing. But, you are going to have a hard job getting over the 'percieved' objections to this type of marketing - Good Luck." Maybe, some need to read my book - "Rich or Poor - The Choice is Ours"
At that time, the Company didn't have in New Zealand, the Services I was looking to see, so didn't pursue it. Ill health as the result of complications from a minor injury then curtailed my activities some what. But now, in late 2011, with my health fully recovered, plus the Company now with a much enhanced Service base and options, the timing is right to get this underway. During all these years [some 15+ to my knowledge] there have been a number of attempts to get this project off the ground - it is slowly progressing as you will see from here. You need to click on "Click here for latest news" just under the top picture. But FUNDING IS ALWAYS GOING TO BE THE BIG STUMBLING BLOCK...!
Okay, would you agree that TELECOMMUNICATIONS & ELECTRICITY are Essential Services?
Of course we would - what would we do without them?
Would you also agree that every home has at least one of these
And pays their Bill each month?
Of course we would
Now, what if a Percentage of that Phone Bill or Electricity Bill
went towards a FUND for the Cable Car?
Beginning to 'get the picture'?
HOW MANY PEOPLE DO YOU THINK JUST MIGHT
BECOME CUSTOMERS IF THEY THOUGHT THAT
A PERCENTAGE OF THEIR ACCOUNT WAS GOING TOWARDS
